How did critical illness insurance begin?


The famous heart surgeon in South Africa, Dr. Christian Barnard, who developed and successfully completed the first heart transplants was actually the "Father" of Critical Illness Insurance. He noticed that most of his patients were recovering quite nicely from the surgery, but they were devastated finacially. Dr. Barnard's brother actually developed the first plan on the South African continent and from there it quickly spread all over Europe. The plans just entered the United States "in a large way" in late 2005 and early 2006.
